Music touches us in ways we cannot completely understand, and it gives voice to things which are otherwise inexpressible. The music ministry at St. Paul’s enhances worship by drawing the entire community together in prayer, praise, and lament through song. If you sing or play an instrument, St. Paul’s has a place for you.

Service of Lessons & Carols 2022

We had a marvelous Service of Lessons & Carols, Sunday, December 18, 6:00 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Duluth. First held at King’s College in Cambridge, England, in 1880, the festival service was reinstituted after World War I ended in 1918. It foretells the birth of Jesus through Old Testament readings, congregational hymns and anthems, selected by St. Paul’s Director of Music, Dr. Thomas K. Hamilton.

Youth Music Program

The children’s music ministry at St. Paul’s consists of two groups:

Cherub Choir: Children in preschool through second grade sing occasionally; They learn simple songs during Sunday KidsWord.

Joyful Noise  is for young people in grades 3-12, and they meet on Sundays after worship from 11:20 am until approximately 12:10 pm. The younger children will meet until 11:45 am, and then return to coffee hour while the teens will learn additional songs that are more challenging. This group participates in worship throughout the year.

Adult Music Program

The Chancel Choir is for adults and young people, grade nine to age 99. The choir sings each Sunday from Rally Day to Memorial Day. They sing a variety of music from classics of the early church to music of the World Church to modern hymns and African American spirituals. Rehearsals are held each Wednesday at 6:15 pm. The choir cares for each other and faithfully attends to their role in music leadership through the singing of hymns, anthems, psalms and liturgical responses. The only requirement is a love for making music for God’s people and openness to having a good time on the journey. One of the highlights of the choir’s year is the presentation of Lessons and Carols during the Advent and Christmas season.               .

HandBell Choir

The Handbell choir is a group of faithful folks who rehearse every Wednesday at 7:40 pm. They provide music during festival worship and at other times during the school year. Some music reading ability is helpful but not required. For more information, contact the Parish Office at 218-724-3535.

Brass Choir

The Brass Choir adds a sense of wonder and beauty to the song of the people of St. Paul’s. They rehearse on three Sundays before they are going to play for worship. So far, we’ve always had enough personnel to play with a full quartet, and more are always welcome. Open to people who are in high school and older.

Soloists and instrumentalists are also welcome. There’s a place for you in the music ministry at St. Paul’s. Contact the Director of Music, Dr. Thomas Hamilton, at 218-724-3535.
