Family Faith Time

These were the 2020 weekly Wednesday sessions of Family Faith Time, with material for understanding each Sunday's Scripture readings. They include short lessons you can use with children, links to videos, crafts, coloring pages and other activities. We are grateful to our former Director of Christian Formation, Sue Van Oss, for all her extra efforts in creating these sessions and saving them for St. Paul's.

Wednesday, June 24, 2020 Abraham and Isaac- Putting our trust in God

5 minute lesson video
video tutorial for the Bible craft
Theme: Trusting God Scripture: Genesis 22:1-14
Today’s Bible lesson about Abraham and Isaac is about trust. As I tell you what happened, I need your help. When I put my hand to my ear like this (demonstrate), I want you to say in your most surprised voice, “Say what!?”
Abraham was Isaac's father. Abraham and his wife Sarah were almost 100 years old when Isaac was born. (Put your hand to your ear for kids to say, “Say what!?”)
And God told Abraham that He was going to have lots of grandchildren and great grandchildren through his son Isaac. One day, God spoke to Abraham and told him to take Isaac up on a mountain and give God the thing that he loved more than anything. (Put your hand to your ear for kids to say, “Say what!?”)
So Abraham took Isaac and they started up the mountain. (Put your hand to your ear for kids to say, “Say what!?”)
On the third day, Abraham told Isaac that they were going to build an altar and offer a sacrifice to God. Isaac said to his father, "The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the offering?" (Put your hand to your ear for kids to say, “Say what!?”)
Abraham answered Isaac and said, "God will provide the lamb." They kept walking until they arrived at the place where God had told him to go. Then Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Abraham was ready to give God the thing he loved the most. (Put your hand to your ear for kids to say, “Say what!?”)
Then Abraham looked and saw a ram caught by his horns in the thicket. (Put your hand to your ear for kids to say, “Say what!?”)
So Abraham took the ram and offered it as a sacrifice to God. Abraham had faith in God and trusted Him completely -- and God provided the lamb -- just as Abraham had told Isaac that He would. When we put our trust in God, He always provides. Dear God, help us, like Abraham, trust You fully and have faith that You will provide. In Jesus' name, amen

Bible Craft: Chalk Ram Scene You’ll Need: ● Abraham and Isaac How-to Video (which is above) ● Black construction paper ● 1 cup flour ● 1 cup water ● 1/2 cup shaving cream ● Food coloring or soap color ● Bowls ● Spoons ● Paint brushes or Q Tips Get Ready: This would be fun to do on a sidewalk or driveway. Test it in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it washes away. Mix the chalk paint with these directions. ● Mix flour and water until there are no clumps. ● Add shaving cream. ● Mix thoroughly. ● Divide evenly in bowls. ● Add coloring to make as many colors as you want. Do This: Say: Abraham trusted God and God provided a ram in a bush. Let’s use chalk paint to paint a picture of a ram in a bush. Let kids create with the chalk paint. Then allow the paint to dry

Wednesday, June 17, 2020 God Cares for Ishmael - We Are Precious In God's Sight

Snack idea:  need pretzel sticks, banana, cheese slice, raisins

Lesson to share with kids:

Say: What are some hobbies that people enjoy? (Allow time for children to respond.)  Reading, knitting, and photography are popular hobbies. Some people like to build things like model cars or airplanes. Others may enjoy outdoor activities like fishing or hiking. Do you have a hobby? What’s your hobby? (Allow time for children to respond.)

Do you think God has a hobby? OK, I know the Bible doesn't tell us that God has a hobby, but if God did, do you know what I think it might be? Bird watching! If I use my imagination, I can see God sitting in heaven with a pair of binoculars. Perhaps God has a book with pictures of all the beautiful birds that God has created and God is trying to see how many of them God can find with  binoculars.
If I really stretch my imagination, I can even hear God saying, "There's a Bluebird, and a Cardinal. Oh look, there's an Eagle, a Meadowlark, and a Sparrow." A Sparrow? Of course God would see a Sparrow, there are millions of them. You've seen them -- common, ordinary, brown Sparrows -- but God must have loved them, because God made so many of them.

What birds do you see outside?

One day Jesus was teaching His disciples that they should not be afraid. Jesus said, "Don't be afraid when people threaten you. Two sparrows are sold for a penny, but not a single sparrow falls to the ground without your Father knowing it. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows."  The Bible says, "Give all your worries and cares to God, for God cares about you." We are more precious to God than a whole flock of sparrows -- and we know how much God loves the sparrow.

Bible Craft: Genesis 21:8-21   Show Your Face
You’ll Need:
● Paper plates - two per child
● Markers - one per child
Do This: Give each child two paper plates. Explain what kind of face they are supposed to draw on each side of each paper plate. Tell kids the eyebrows and mouth can show emotion best.
Side 1 - happy face
Side 2 - sad face
Side 3 - mad face
Side 4 - worried face
Say: Now that you have created your face reactions, I am going to tell you a story from the Old Testament. I will pause and say to you “show your face.” You will think about how the characters feel during the story at that time. Hold up the face that you think best represents that in front of your face. Today’s Bible lesson comes from Genesis, the first book in the Bible. (Show them the book of
Genesis in your Bible.) This true story from Genesis 21 is about two families. Family one was Abraham, Sarah and Isaac. Family two was Abraham’s other family, Hagar and Ishmael. These families didn’t get along very well.

Show your face. (Invite kids to hold up the face that best represents how these families feel.)

Sarah and Hagar did not get along very well and finally Sarah told Abraham that Hagar and her son, Ishmael, should move away. Abraham was worried and didn’t know what to do. He wanted to stop the fighting, but he also loved his son Ishmael. He also loved his wife Sarah and his other son Isaac.

Show your face. (Invite kids to hold up the face that best represents how Abraham feels.)

God knew Abraham’s worries and told him not to worry. It would be okay for Ishmael to move away and God promised to take care of Ishmael.

Show your face. (Invite kids to hold up the face that best represents how Abraham feels.)

Early the next morning, Abraham packed some food and water for Hagar and Ishmael and sent them on their way. Hagar and Ishmael went on their way to the dessert. As you can imagine the desert was hot and they needed lots of water. Soon, all their water was gone. Hagar put Ishmael under a bush and she cried out to God.

Show your face. (Invite kids to hold up the face that best represents how Hagar feels.)

God heard her and the boy crying and sent an angel to Hagar. The angel told Hagar not to worry and opened her eyes to see a well. She was able to get water to give to Ishmael to drink. God was with the boy and took care of him as he grew up.

Show your face. (Invite kids to hold up the face that best represents how Hagar and Ishmael feel.)
Ask:
● What do you think about how God took care of Ishmael?
● Did you know that God loves and cares for you, too?
Say: Wow! Even though things got tough, God promised that God would care for Ishmael. You
and I are precious in God’s sight.
